Here’s a new Swedish outfit who have just released their debut single and video. It’s NOLA and their heartwrencher of an introduction to their sound, ‘Illusions’.
This is one that builds and builds. Starting off with the most simplistic of piano tinklings and subdued of vocals, progressing into an almighty chorus of wailing (the refrain is based around an “oh-oh, oh-oh” vocal that gets louder and more desperate as the song progresses) and a big guitar solo middle eight, before finishing off precisely where it started – wallowing in a pit of grey depression. All quite beautifully so though. It only takes one listen (and not even before the song ends, at that) to realise that this is something a bit special.
NOLA are comprised of singer Johanna Karlson, and producer Lars Halapi. And what a debut.
