Mary N’Diaye popped up on Swedish television at the weekend. Appearing on Bingolotto to give the first performance of her next single ‘She’s Not The First’. And showcasing a fab new haircut while she was at it.
It’s a step away from the up-tempo dance brilliance of previous singles ‘För Att Jag Kan’ and ‘Big Dreamer’, and very much a departure from the downright bizarreness of her Melodifestivalen 2013 entry ‘Gosa’ (what WERE they thinking, selecting that as her entry when we know she’s capable of so much better?!).
Instead, the former star of The Voice of Sweden (its thus far one and only series, back in 2012) has delivered a soulful and melancholic reggae ballad – one with a dramatic melody and an ear-catching guitar riff that forms part of its chorus. Christ knows what she’ll come out with next, in her sonically disparate line-up of single releases that never really seem to lead to an EP or album. But we’re glad she’s still churning them out, albeit gradually.
Also on the show, Mary teamed up with Erik Segerstedt (who is part of this month’s houseband on Bingolotto) to perform a cover ‘Make You Feel My Love’. You can watch that here.
