They’re back?! No brainer, no contest, no other possible decision. Last year, for the first time ever, Iceland were the runaway favourites to win Eurovision. The song – ‘Think About Things’ – even managed to break out of the ESC bubble and become a hit in its own right. So it’s only natural that Daði & Gagnamagnið were invited back, since they never got their shot at Eurovision in 2020.
What are they competing with? ’10 Years’, which was premiered on Icelandic TV last night, and released everywhere straight afterwards.
How did it get selected? Icelandic broadcaster RUV simply tasked Daði Freyr with writing a song for Eurovision 2021, and gave him complete freedom to go about doing it. He wrote about a dozen, and this was the one he chose to take all the way.
What’s it like? Musically, it’s got a lot in common with last year’s ‘Think About Things’, with upped synth, added disco, the inclusion of a choir element that will play an important role in Rotterdam, and the introduction of some sumptuous strings. Lyrically, it’s a super-cute piece about how obsessed he still is with his Mrs even after a decade. It’s a lot of fun in the most adorable of ways, and we can see a whole lot of people falling in love with its many charms over the next couple of months.
You can find ’10 Years’ on our Best New Pop playlist.
