Gravitonas continue their debutante rampage through 2010 with the release of a brand new EP today. ‘The Colliseum EP’ is available RIGHT NOW to download from iTunes stores all over the world. So wherever you are – you’re in for a treat!
It’s the second EP from the group, following on from this summer’s ‘The Hypnosis EP’. And despite the fact that the latter housed the absolutely phenomenal ‘Religious’, dare we say it – the new EP is actually even better.
New single ‘You Break Me Up’ kicks things off with a ceremonious high. It’s the group’s first foray into balladry, something which we always imagined they’d be very good at. And there’s lots of things we like about ‘You Break Me Up’. It displays a whole new dimension to Andreas’ voice – an intentional fragility. This is complimented by complex, clever, and catchy backing melodies, both in the music and in the backing vocals. It creeps its way to completion, planting itself subtly inside your head. On the first listen, you think it’s great. But by the third or fourth listen you’re hooked, and never want to be let go! Oh, and the middle eight is just WOW.
‘Dry Your Eyes’ manages to have an almost identical effect to the one ‘You Break Me Up’ has, despite sounding very different. It’s captivating in its strong melodies paired with a beautiful downbeat subtlety. Vocally, if ‘You Break Me Up’ was the sound of Andreas dying of a broken heart, ‘Dry Your Eyes’ is his haunting cry from the beyond the grave – advising others not to follow in his mistakes. The best thing about ‘Dry Your Eyes’ though is its heavy use of strings. It lifts the song from being too eerie, and prepares you for what’s about to happen next on the EP…..
BANG! All subtlety ends there! ‘Not Gonna Be Dancing’ brings the dance, disco, drums, and drama to an almighty rave up! Dominated by thundering strings throughout, it features Andreas give one of the rock vocal performances that we got used to on the first EP, and it sits perfectly well alongside the pure club track that he’s singing along with. This is our favourite song on here, and you’ll see why when you have a listen. It’s got a fantastic energy to it. AND a gothic choir in the middle eight, accompanied by tortured shrieks from Andreas! Lovely.
The EP closer is ‘Youth Is Wasted On The Young’. It’s not like anything else on here, aside from the strings-aplenty-ness. It’s like an old fashioned rock opera merged with a minimal electro track from the eighties. It hasn’t got the wow factor of the other three songs on here, and could probably never be anything more than an album/EP track, but that’s not to take away from the fact that it’s still an enjoyable listen, and a welcome addition on here. And it serves to demonstrate just how multi dimensional Gravitonas are shaping up to be.
